Tropicool Slot

Tropicool sets a row of frozen feature symbols above a fixed 6×6 grid, and only a win that clears the cells below can bring one into play. Add scatter-paying birds and a bonus round with a rising Win Multiplier, and that is most of the game.

Watch which cells empty after a win, because a feature symbol only activates when the space below it has cleared. If you reach the bonus, look for the two extra symbols on the Feature Reel, Extra Drops and Progressive Multiplier.

Frozen fruit, two birds and a feature reel

A win in Tropicool does two jobs, paying out and clearing room for the Feature Reel to release a Wild, Locked Wild, Multiplier Wild or Row Swap. ELK Studios released it in May 2021 with 46,656 ways on a 6×6 board that never changes size, so the variation comes from those symbols, whereas Cygnus grows its grid as a round goes on.

The story is played for laughs. Tony Toucano and Fiona Flamingo give up migrating and settle on an island off Antarctica, among palm trees, snowflakes, beach huts and frozen fruit. Elmo the sloth and the name Cool Reel both arrive later and appear nowhere in this game's rules or sheet, so look to Tropicool 2 if he is what brought you here.

RTP of 95.0% is a long-run theoretical figure, one point above both sequels. With volatility at 7 of 10 and a 23.1% hit frequency, empty rounds still make up 76.9% of a long sample.

Inside a Tropicool round

Symbols land on the grid, sometimes stacked, and any win pays and explodes. Remaining symbols drop, feature symbols sitting over empty cells are activated, and new symbols fall in to create further chances. If those form another win, the sequence runs again.

Access to the Feature Reel depends on where a win falls, since one that touches only a few columns frees only what sits above those cells. Birds follow their own rule: the symbol payout page says full birds pay scattered and gives no further definition, so open the in-game paytable before judging a result.

From the Feature Reel to the bonus

This game's rules are brief, so the details below draw on them, the official page and the product sheet together.

Feature Reel

The reel above the grid holds Wild, Locked Wild, Multiplier Wild and Row Swap symbols under ice. Wins break that ice, and any feature symbol above an empty cell drops in and activates. A small win can matter more than its payout, because it may release something that keeps the avalanche running. The product sheet shows the symbols on view above the grid, so check what a win would set loose.

Wild and Locked Wild

A Wild substitutes for any symbol except Wild feature, Bonus and Row Swap symbols, and a payline made only of Wilds pays as the highest value symbol. The Locked Wild goes further, charged to stay locked for 3 winnings. Each new win in a sequence then finds a Wild already in place, at least until that charge has run out.

Multiplier Wild

Wins that include this Wild are multiplied by x2 to x5, and it is the only multiplier the rules describe outside the bonus. They do not say how two of them combine in one win, so treat that case as unknown. It is also particular to this first game: neither sequel lists a Multiplier Wild among its feature symbols, though Tropicool 3 has a separate Multiplier Symbol that feeds a global total.

Row Swap

One symbol replaces all the others on its row, except Wilds and Bonus symbols. A full row of one symbol puts that symbol in all six columns, which gives it a complete run across the grid and lets it connect with matching symbols above or below. The rules for this game stop at that one line, and the fuller Row Swap detail in Tropicool 2 should not be assumed here.

Free Drops bonus game

Three or more Bonus symbols trigger it, and the product sheet gives 10 drops for 3 symbols, 15 for 4, 20 for 5 and 25 for 6 or more. Two extra symbols join the Feature Reel during the bonus: Extra Drops adds free drops, and Progressive Multiplier raises the Win Multiplier. Both reach you the same way as every other feature, so wins that clear the right cells are what feed the round.

Tropicool X-iter modes and their prices

The menu runs from 5x to 500x the bet and only works in the base game, with one RTP figure for all its modes. Bonus buys land 3 to 6 Bonus symbols, so the number of free drops varies.

ModeCostWhat it does
Guaranteed Win5xOne round with a guaranteed winning combination, though the rules promise no particular size of win.
Locked Wilds25xOne round with 3 Locked Wilds dropping into the grid at the start.
Bonus100xOne round that triggers the bonus game with the Win Multiplier at x1.
Big Bonus200xThe same bonus trigger, with the Win Multiplier starting at x5.
Super Bonus500xThe same bonus trigger, with the Win Multiplier starting at x10.

X-iter is not available in every market.

What the 10,000x cap and 95.0% RTP mean

The cap sits at 10,000x the bet, and the sheet's €1,000,000 max exposure confirms it at a €100 bet. Nothing about that ceiling makes it a normal outcome, so price the buys in real terms: on a €1 stake the Super Bonus is a €500 purchase, and its x10 start improves the multiplier without promising any return.

At 95.0% this has the best RTP of the first three Tropicool games, and at 7 of 10 its volatility sits below the third game's 8. Stakes run from €0.20 to €100.

How Tropicool compares with its sequels

Tropicool 2 lifts the reel to three rows, calls it the Cool Reel, adds Elmo, big symbols and Mystery symbols, and raises the cap to 25,000x, though its bonus table starts at 6 drops where this one starts at 10. Tropicool 3 brings in rolling symbols and Elmo's Revenge. Tropicool 4 and 5 have also been released, and this site does not cover them yet.

Tropicool pros and cons

What works

  • 95.0% RTP, the highest of the first three Tropicool games
  • A bonus table running from 10 to 25 free drops
  • Locked Wilds last for 3 winnings, which helps sequences along
  • Multiplier Wilds of x2 to x5 are available outside the bonus
  • X-iter menu starts at 5x with a Guaranteed Win mode

What to watch

  • Capped at 10,000x, against 25,000x in both sequels
  • Thin in-game rules: full birds and multiple Multiplier Wilds are barely explained
  • Feature symbols need a cleared cell below them, so a small win in the wrong place changes little
  • No Elmo, big symbols or Mystery symbols, so rounds are plainer than in the sequels

Who should pick this one

Pick Tropicool for the feature-reel idea in its plainest form, with a slightly better RTP than its sequels and fewer interacting systems to learn. It also has the longest bonus table of the first three games. Skip it if Elmo, big symbols or a higher cap are what interest you, or if you dislike rules that leave details to the paytable.

Tropicool questions answered

What is the RTP of Tropicool?

Both sheets list 95.0%, which only holds in theory over a very long run. One session can finish well above or below it.

What is the maximum win on Tropicool?

Wins are capped at 10,000x the bet. That figure is a ceiling on the game, and reaching it should not be expected.

Can I play a Tropicool demo for free?

Yes, there is a free demo on this page using virtual credit. It shows how the Feature Reel behaves.

How do you trigger the Tropicool bonus game?

Three or more Bonus symbols start the Free Drops round, with 10, 15, 20 or 25 drops depending on the count. Where X-iter is offered, it can also be bought from 100x the bet.

Is Elmo the sloth in the first Tropicool?

No. The rules, official page and product sheet for this game mention only the birds, Tony Toucano and Fiona Flamingo. Elmo first appears in Tropicool 2.
